THE MAFEKING LAMP was erected by public subscription in 1901 as a monument to celebrate the relief of
Mafeking and other towns, which had been held under siege during the Boer War in South Africa. Names of
those Richmond River men who lost their lives during this campaign were inscribed on one panel of the lamp.
More memorial plaques have been added to commemorate other wars. The lamp was dedicated as an official
war memorial in 1991. It is now a central part of our Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services.
