Katherine is 314km (195 miles) south of Darwin, the centre of a large region covering cattle country, fruit-producing farmlands and national parks. Katherine is accessible by McCafferty's and Greyhound Coachlines, twice daily flights with Air North from Darwin, and once daily from Alice Springs. There are also scenic charters to the area with Outback NT Safaris.
Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park, located 29km from Katherine, is the area's major attraction. Visitors can enjoy a Boat Cruise, which accesses five of the thirteen magnificent gorges, they can hire a canoe and explore at their leisure, join a flight in either a fixed wing plane or see the gorges by Helicopter. 100km of walking trails thread their way through the park thus allowing the visitor to view bird and animal life. Guided Tours are available for those who wish to explore their environment using canoes, 4WD or walking.
