Tennant Creek is situated in the 'Golden Heart' of the Northern Territory, 506km north of Alice Springs, 675km south of Katherine, and 663km west of Mount Isa. It is a comfortable day's drive from each of these centres. The Tennant Creek region extends from Barrow Creek in the south to Newcastle Waters in the north, and east to the Queensland border.
During Australia's last gold rush in the 1930s, the town of Tennant Creek, 12km south of the creek itself, was created almost literally overnight. Popular legend tells how the town was situated where the beer wagon broke down. In reality, it was sited outside the telegraph reserve - a radius of 11km from the stone telegraph station, built in 1872. This historic building can be explored as part of the exciting story of the Overland Telegraph, which linked Australia to the outside world.
Accommodation of all kinds is available and is of a good standard, with the town providing all the service facilities a traveller may need. Coaches stop at the transit centre in the main street providing easy access to most Accommodation.
Tours to the famous Devils Marbles are available from Tennant Creek daily. The huge rounded boulders, 106km south of Tennant Creek on the Stuart Highway which are precariously balanced, spread for miles over a wide shallow valley and are particularly spectacular at sunrise and sunset.
