City Hall's exceptional location in the very heart of Brisbane makes it the ideal place for tourists to start their visit in Brisbane. The city's most significant historical landmark combines Brisbane City Hall, City Hall Art Gallery, The Clock Tower, King George Square and Brisbane Administration Centre. Built over a ten year period during the 1920s, Brisbane City Hall was considered, at the time, to be among the great structures of the Commonwealth. Brisbane City Hall is the official residence for the Lord Mayor of Brisbane. The unique, heritage listed building is an interesting example of English neo-classical architecture in a modern building. The scale is impressive and full of old world charm. The venue illuminates prestige and grandeur, creating a lasting impression on all who walk through its doors. The experience begins upon entering the foyer with its sweeping marble staircase, vaulted ceilings, chandeliers and mosaic-tiled floor. The City Hall Art Gallery was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1977 and contains extensive displays of paintings, ceramics and photographs. The Clock Tower, an amazing massive Italian renaissance structure rises 92 metres above the City Plaza. Access to the Tower is via a beautifully restored elevator. Once Brisbane's highest point, the observation platform provides excellent panoramic views of the city and its skyscrapers. City Hall is an ideal tourism attraction for individual visitors taking a leisurely walk through its corridors and the Clock Tower. Organised guided tours are also available for groups.
