Fondly referred to as Australia's
most liveable city, the Queensland capital Brisbane brims with
style. In the former penal colony life revolves around the beautiful
Brisbane River. World-class theatre, great shopping, vibrant
markets, sophisticated art galleries, and gourmet restaurants
offer all you'd expect from a capital city, but still with the
warmth of the Queensland country. The former riverside site
of World Expo '88 is now the popular SouthBank Parklands, a
thriving waterside playground complete with city-view swimming
lagoon. The nearby seaside city of Redcliffe, site of Queensland's
first European settlement in 1824, offers wonderful views of
Moreton Bay, a popular spot for sailing, fishing and swimming.
Brisbane is also the gateway to the beautiful beaches of both
the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.
Things you can do in Brisbane:
* Eat a bug. The lobster-like Moreton Bay Bugs
captured by fisherman in Moreton Bay are fabulous grilled on
the barbie.
* Don't miss the Queensland architecture. Traditional
'Queenslander' style homes are built on stilts, to escape floods
and allow air to circulate freely. Built from timber, they usually
feature polished wood floors and wide verandahs, perfect for
relaxing with family on a hot Queensland day.
* Put your feet up at Queensland's oldest licensed
pub, the Grand View Hotel.
* Go ghostbusting with Jack Sim, manager of
Ghost Tours. Jack conducts eerie tours of the dark city streets,
Boggo Road Gaol, heritage houses and historic pubs.
* Fancy a XXXX? Take a guided tour of Castlemaine
brewery, brewers of Foster's, VB, and XXXX, the famous amber
nectar.
* Leap into Brisbane life at Kangaroo Point,
a rockclimbing and abseiling venue overlooking the river.
* Hug a koala or hand-feed a kangaroo at the
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. You'll also encounter possums, wombats,
emus and lyrebirds. The most scenic route to the sanctuary is
via a pleasant cruise along the Brisbane River.
* Feed the wild dolphins at the Tangalooma
Resort on Moreton Island.
