The Capricorn Region is your entry to Tropical Queensland. The Tropic of Capricorn runs through the region and the major centre of Rockhampton, the first Australian City 'in the tropics'. This unique address ensures there is something for everyone in the Capricorn Region, enjoy tropical islands, magnificent beaches, aboriginal & colonial heritage, state forests, 13 national parks and the chance to fossick for your own sapphires.
The Capricorn Region is four great holiday destinations in one. Rockhampton and its immediate surrounds are graced with superb examples of its European and Aboriginal history, while adjacent the Capricorn Coast has beautiful coastal rainforests , sub-tropical islands such as Great Keppel Island and unspoiled sandy beaches . To the west the colourful patchwork of diverse farming, cattle and mining industries captures those who travel to Capricorn's Rural Hinterland. The Central Highlands and Sapphire Gemfields offer visitors the opportunity to strike it rich fossicking for Sapphire's or enjoying the magnificent beauty of Carnarvon Gorge.
Things to do on the Capricorn Coast:
* Ride a bull at the Great Western Hotel, Rockhampton.
The famous pub offers regular bull riding in its own bull ring,
and is a favourite spot for locals to unwind on Friday nights.
Publican Terry O'Hanlan, a former ringer, has introduced hotly-contested
rodeos in the backyard of the hotel.
* Visit Heron Island, one of the Great Barrier
Reef's most beautiful islands. Heron operates as both a world-class
resort and marine research station, and from January to March
each year, turtles choose to nest there.
* Take a boat to One Tree Island, where you'll
find Professor Ove Heoght Guldberg, a University of Queensland
academic based at the Heron Island Research Station. From his
lone post, he studies coral formations, crown of thorns starfish,
and simulates global warming.
* Go back in time at the Calliope River Historical
Village, a perfectly restored historical village include schoolhouse,
pub, and church. There's also a thriving artist community, and
the local markets are a perfect place to pick up a bargain.
* Enjoy a bounty of mudcrab at Gladstone. The
city is known for its mouth-watering mudcrab.
* Meet Gemfields character Hazel Bird, a reflexologist
who loves gems so much, she's replaced her teeth with them.
* Escape to an underground world at Olsen's
Capricorn Caverns, unique limestone caves which can be explored
by candlelight.
* Smile at a crocodile at the Koorana Crocodile
Farm. Manager John Lever is known as the local 'Croc-buster'
and is regularly called on to capture rogue crocodiles.
* Fossick for your fortune on the Gemfields
at towns like Rubyvale and Sapphire, where zircons, diamonds,
sapphires, gold and other semi-precious gems are waiting to
be found.
* Fish for barramundi, a mouth-watering freshwater
fish, on the banks of the Fitzroy River.
