The Fraser Coast and South Burnett is rich in history and natural beauty. History buffs will be fascinated by Maryborough City with its original Queenslander homes and reminders of yesteryear at every turn. The majestic pines of Bunya Mountains provide a lush backdrop for the South Burnett Valley, an area rich in history, agriculture, wineries and welcoming country towns. And each year from August to October, magnificent humpback whales come to frolic in the sheltered waters between World Heritage Fraser Island and Hervey Bay.
Things to do on the Fraser Coast:
* Magic does happen on Fraser Island, the only
place in the world where rainforest grows out of sand. Check
out the crystal clear freshwater lakes, coloured sands, and
great fishing too - and watch out for the resident dingoes.
* Cruise to idyllic Platypus Bay, where pods
of humpback whales put on a show between July and October in
the warm waters. Strict environmental laws protect the whales,
who are so curious about the human admirers they often swim
right up to the boats to investigate.
* Don't miss the peanut capital of Australia,
the pretty South Burnett town of Kingaroy. The quiet rural community
is the country's major producer of peanuts and soya beans, and
also has a fledgling wine industry, with vineyards already producing
award-winning wines.
* Kingaroy vintner John Crane, who pioneered
the industry in the region, produces fabulous boutique wines
from his picturesque vineyard at Booie. He's passionate about
winemaking in the local area, which he says produces the perfect
drop.
