Crisp winter morning in Stanthorpe |

This is truly where you can escape the pressures of the city, the humidity of the coast and do as much or as little as you please. This is your alternative Queensland holiday. Sample delicious stone fruits straight from the grower. Tour wineries and taste award-winning wines. Explore the region's history and heritage. Take a bushwalk in spectacular national parks or share the romance of an open log fire. Try your hand at freshwater fishing or fossicking, or go sailing on the region's numerous lakes and dams. In the Southern Downs you experience real country life and hospitality, and regardless of how long or short your stay, you'll want to return.
The region provides a natural alternative to the cities and beaches of the coastal area. The Southern Downs stretches from Cunningham's Gap (120 kilometres south west of Brisbane ) in the east, north to Allora, south to the border town of Wallangarra, and to Goondiwindi in the west. The region has a population of approximately 40,000 people and prides itself on its old-fashioned hospitality. The principal towns are Warwick , Stanthorpe , Killarney, Allora, Inglewood and Texas and Goondiwindi.
Things to do on the Southern Downs:
* Enjoy a cold beer at historic Rudd's Pub
at Nobby, where much-loved author Steele Rudd, creator of the
Dad and Dave series, penned many of his stories. The pub is
filled with memorabilia and photos from the past, and also serves
slap-up country meals.
* Pack a hamper and relax at the aptly-named
Picnic Point Park, where graded walks offer stunning views of
the Lockyer Valley.
* Take time out to smell the flowers at one
of the Toowoomba's beautiful parks and gardens. Don't miss the
Scented Garden at Laurel Bank Park, which was designed especially
for the visually impaired.
* Step back in time at the Cobb & Co Museum,
where manager Deborah Tranter will relate the history of early
Australian travel. The museum is home to a collection of genuine
coaches and harnesses.
* Visit Toowoomba's first Bed and Breakfast Inn,
Vacy Hall, a lovingly-restored colonial mansion that gives modern-day
travellers a taste of the good old days.
* Stroll through a vineyard at nearby Stanthorpe
and learn how Queensland's best wines are made. Wine-maker Angelo
Puglisi of Ballandean Estate, is recognised as the father of
the wine industry. His wines have won an array of gold medals
and are exported to England.
* Take a heritage walk around Warwick, home
to some of the State's oldest buildings and museums. Warwick
is home to the Warwick Rodeo - Australia's first of its kind
- which attracts roughriders from around the country.
* Sink a fishing line at Leslie Dam, where
the golden and silver perch you catch can be grilled on a barbie.
The Ju Raku En Japanese Garden in Toowoomba, is a little piece
of Japan, complete with walking trails, lake, waterfalls and
stream.
