Visitors to the Townsville region will be unable to forget the beautifully warm days, with the sun shining brightly on the calm blue sea. With over 300 days of sunshine each year, visitors can truly enjoy the stunning natural beauty, rich history and fabulous man-made attractions that await them in this region. Couples, families and people of all ages will enjoy the many activities and attractions of the North, whether they are seeking peaceful relaxation or something more adventurous.
The region extends from Townsville south to Home Hill and north to Mission Beach . Townsville is the centre of the North Queensland region and from here you can travel west to the old gold towns of Charters Towers and Ravenswood, or north to Tully for whitewater rafting . Magnetic Island is just 20 minutes from Townsville by ferry, crossing calm Cleveland Bay. Other islands in the North Queensland region include Orpheus , Bedarra , Dunk and Hinchinbrook Islands. Each island offers a different style of accommodation, from rustic to romantic. Activities vary and include breathtaking nature walks, a wide range of watersports or just simply relaxing on your own stretch of beach under a palm tree.
Things to do in Townsville:
* Queenslanders say the best place to eat a mango is in the bath. You'll see why when you enjoy a delectable Bowen mango from the town of Bowen - Bowen mangos are known as the cream of the crop.
* Take a history lesson in Townsville. The city is filled with quirky stories, including Hollywood screen legend Errol Flynn's gold mine. A boardwalk along the beachfront known as the Strand is a favourite place for families and couples to unwind.
* Discover magical Magnetic Island, just 8 km from Townsville. So-named by Captain Cook, whose ship compass went haywire when he sailed by in 1770, Magnetic Island has 25 beaches, huge granite boulders, hoop pines and 25 km of walking tracks. Tour guide David "Crusty" Herron, knows everything there is to know about island bush tucker, and the local history.
* Go troppo with the region's favourite drink, Mango Rico, a liquer produced from North Queensland mangos which is best enjoyed poured over ice or in champagne.
* Learn the legend of the HMS Pandora, a frigate which sank into deep waters off the Gulf of Carpentaria in 1790, after being sent to search for mutineers on board the infamous Bounty. Townsville's Museum of TNQ has recreated a life-size replica of Pandora, complete with relics salvaged from the shipwreck.
* Relax at the former home of a man who taught the King of England to play billiards. George Grey, who once lived at The Rocks Guesthouse in Townsville, was one of Australia's leading billiards players at the turn of the century. His home is now a popular place of rest for Townsville visitors. Manager Jo Sproats knows all the tales.
* Taste Tropical North Queensland cuisine, produced using the freshest local produce. French chef Michel Flores is renowned for his ability to work wonders with local ingredients, and has been recognised for his skill by being inducted in the American Express Hall of Fame.
