Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, is a small elegant city in a park. Set beside the Torrens River between the Adelaide Hills and the Gulf of St Vincent, it is probably Australia's best-preserved capital city. Designed by Colonel William Light in 1836, the city centre is laid out on a square mile grid of wide streets with gracious colonial architecture surrounded by 930 hectares of parklands. All the inner city highlights are within easy walking distance and it's almost impossible to get lost.
The Mediterranean climate encourages a relaxed and indulgent lifestyle. This is a city of pubs, cafes, restaurants, fine, fresh food and wine. Adelaide's million or so people love to have a good time and host festivals for everything from the arts, and wine and food to roses, car races and horse trials. Every two years, the entire city becomes a stage for the internationally acclaimed Adelaide Festival of Arts and the Festival Fringe.
But in between festivals there is always plenty to do:
-Watch test cricket or Aussie Rules Football, play a round of golf or follow international horse trials in city parks
-Learn about Aboriginal Dreaming at the Aboriginal Cultures Gallery at the South Australian Museum or the National Aboriginal Cultural Institute - Tandanya before going on an Outback adventure
-Dine al fresco by the river, by the beach, or at any of the city's hundreds of sidewalk cafes
-Try your luck at the Skycity Adelaide Casino built inside the old Adelaide railway station
-Explore the sights of Adelaide and North Adelaide by foot on a historical walking trail
-Kayak through the Port Adelaide mangroves to meet the local Dolphin population
-Discover South Australia's settlement history and early beach culture at the Bay Discovery Centre in Glenelg
-Visit the Hallett Cove Conservation Park with its outstanding examples of glacial pavements along the coastal clifftops. Interpretive walking trails explain the park's geological history
-Visit Port Noarlunga for snorkeling along the reef and fishing
at the mouth of the Onkaparinga River
