Located in the Burrup Peninsula near the Port of Dampier and the town of Karratha in Western Australia, is the north-west Shelf Natural Gas Project.
It is the biggest and one of the most important resource developments yet undertaken in Australia.
A Visitors Centre overlooks the project with panoramic views, and here you can see models, displays and an award-winning movie telling the story of this remarkable development. We suggest that approximately one hour be put aside to fully appreciate what the centre has to offer.
To reach the Visitors Centre, take the Karratha-Dampier Road and turn onto the Burrup Road (about 5 kilometres from Dampier). The road is signposted to the project. Follow the road for about 10 kilometres. The Visitors Centre is located on the right, just before the project entrance. The North West Shelf Natural Gas Project is not open to the public.
The Visitors Centre is manned by trained personnel. Souvenirs of the area and the Gas Project are on sale. During the wildflower season, a display of wildflowers is a highlight of the landscape surrounding the project.
