Construction of the Old Gaol, built with local stone that was quarried with the assistance of Aboriginal labour, commenced in 1886. The large octagon shaped building contains four wings each of which housed up to 40 prisoners. A visit to the museum is a harsh reminder of our colonial past.
Booklets on the history of the Old Gaol can be obtained from the Roebourne Visitor Centre , which is housed in the Old Gaol along with the Museum and the Arts and Crafts Group.
A visit to the museum is an educational and enjoyable experience.
